An accurate conclusion as to the causes leading to such death rate among young children is impossible without detailed information concerning the physical condition of the infants when admitted as well as upon the conditions in which these children are cared for. That a large proportion of the deaths is due to congenital and other diseased conditions existing prior to admission, or mal-nutrition in the case of bottle-fed infants, is generally conceded, hence a true study of causes of death should consider children that are physically well when admitted to institutions separately from those that are ill, and infants that are wet nursed from those that are given artifically prepared foods.
